ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

Part of New York’s modern dance tradition since 1986, Doug Varone’s company works across genres in a kinetic, physical style. They found their match in Buenos Aires-based choreographer Brenda Angiel’s aerial dance company, with whom they went on to create a collaborative piece for the 2013 BAM Next Wave Festival. Doug Varone and Dancers also worked with the world-famous Recycled Orchestra in Paraguay, learned Amazonian folk dance in Peru, and led workshops with students across the region.

FROM THE TRAVEL BLOG

“We are 20 miles outside of Paraguay’s capital and the landscape is already changing. The roads are unmarked, narrow and rutted, lined with doorless stone buildings and empty balding lots. Refuse from the landfill saturates the scenery.”

—Xan Burley on visiting The Recycled Orchestra
