Rooted in Irish step dance, choreographer Seán Curran and his company collaborated with Kyrgyz folk artists and others across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, and Turkmenistan.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

The New York-based company brought their unique approach to rhythm-based modern dance with them across Central Asia. They worked with traditional dance companies in Turkmenistan, danced in traditional opera houses and glass pyramids in Kazakhstan, and formed a lasting collaboration with the Kyrgyz folk music ensemble Ustatshakirt, culminating in the 2015 Next Wave Production, "Dream’d in a Dream".

ABOUT THE COMPANY

Founded in 1997, Seán Curran Company has toured to nearly 100 venues in the US, France, Germany, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic and Turkmenistan.

Presentations in New York City include seasons at Brooklyn Academy of Music, The Joyce Theater, Dance Theater Workshop, Dance New Amsterdam, the Guggenheim Museum, New Victory Theater, 92nd Street Y/Harkness Dance Project, Danspace Project, Symphony Space, Central Park Summerstage and Celebrate Brooklyn.

In 2012, inspired by their DanceMotion USA℠ journey, the collaborative project, Dream’d in a Dream, was created between Seán Curran Company and traditional Kyrgyz ensemble Ustatshakirt Plus, whose repertory encompasses a unique form of mountain music rarely heard in western concert settings. The production premiered at The University of Notre Dame's DeBartolo Performing Arts Center and was presented as part of the 2015 Next Wave Festival at Brooklyn Academy of Music. Other recent touring works include Left Exit, an examination of spirituality, faith, and religion, and Travel Songs, an evening of works with the Grammy Award-winning King’s Singers.

The company's artistic excellence has been recognized through funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, New Music USA, National Dance Project, Jerome Robbins Foundation, New York State Council on the Arts, New York Foundation for the Arts, O’Donnell-Green Music and Dance Foundation, Mary Flagler Cary Charitable Trust, Harkness Foundation for Dance, Greenwall Foundation, Arts International’s Fund for US Artists, Theater Development Fund, and Altria Group, Inc.

DanceMotion USASM was a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State, administered by BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) to facilitate cultural exchange while showcasing the best in contemporary American dance abroad.
