LA’s renowned tap dance troupe led workshops and gave free performances in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

Rooted in jazz music, this award-winning dance and music ensemble traced diasporic percussion traditions through Central Africa. The company collaborated with the National Ballet du Congo, jammed with musical luminaries in Mozambique, performed to sold out crowds in Zimbabwe, and gave away 500 pairs of tap shoes across all three countries.

Jazz Tap Ensemble combines original choreography in rhythm tap dance with live jazz music.

Founded in 1979, the company has been honored to present and share the stage with a pantheon of tap legends, including: Jimmy Slyde, The Nicholas Brothers, Charles “Honi” Coles, Eddie Brown, Brenda Bufalino, Dianne Walker, Savion Glover, and the beloved Gregory Hines. The company has toured extensively to numerous important theaters around the world, including the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC; Riverside Theatre in London; Theater de la Ville in Paris; and Maison de la Danse in Lyon, France.

DanceMotion USASM was a program of the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State, administered by BAM (Brooklyn Academy of Music) to facilitate cultural exchange while showcasing the best in contemporary American dance abroad.
