ABOUT THE COLLABORATION

For three weeks in October 2012, three dancers from the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company (KNCDC) lived and worked in Boise, Idaho, collaborating with Trey McIntyre Project (TMP) on a brand new piece for the BAM Next Wave Festival, “The Unkindness of Ravens.” They were welcomed in the airport with flashmob, celebrated with an official “Korean National Dance Company Day” in Boise, and taught traditional Korean dance to Trey McIntyre and his dancers. The residency culminated in a performance of the piece during Trey McIntyre Project’s annual fall show in Boise, and a final split-bill performance at BAM featuring the entire Korea National Contemporary Dance Company.

“So Jin, Taehee, and Anlee are greeted with big hugs before Monday’s rehearsal, and as the two groups attempt to describe their weekend with broken gestures and big pantomimes, they erupt into giggles. Christina starts the warm-up with a Korean greeting, to which they all applaud.”

Trey McIntyre Project

Trey McIntyre Project was founded in 2005 to realize the vision of artistic director Trey McIntyre. Founders McIntyre, John Michael Schert, and Anne Mueller formed the organization as a summer touring company premiering at the Vail International Dance Festival. McIntyre picked his dream team of dancers from various dance companies he worked with throughout the year, corralling them all at the White Oak Plantation for a summer residency before touring to summer dance festivals throughout the US. Momentum built quickly and national and international success led McIntyre to establish a full-time company in Boise, Idaho from 2008 to 2014.

The company achieved great audience and critical success as McIntyre created over 23 original works as well as numerous film projects, interactive site specific works, and photography collections. Trey McIntyre Project was also lauded for its innovative business model and unique way of engaging with audiences and communities. Bedside interactions with hospital patients, engagement in the schools, surprise SpUrbans on the street, and other groundbreaking practices all led to receiving prestigious grants from organizations such as ArtPlace. McIntyre and company were also named Boise's Economic Development Cultural Ambassador for two years in a row.

In addition to showing work consistently in Boise, the company performed in hundreds of prestigious venues across the world including Brooklyn Academy of Music, Carnegie Hall, Jacob's Pillow, Walt Disney Concert Hall, and Zellerbach Hall.
